How to install BUTTERY LUTs

In this article we’ll go through the process of installing the BUTTERY LUTs in your color grading software.

These LUTs work with any software that support 33x .cube files. DaVinci, FCPX, Adobe Premiere are just some of the compatible software out there.

Installing BUTTERY LUTs

FCPX (Final Cut Pro X)

Step 1: Prepare Your LUTs

  1. Ensure your LUT files are in a compatible format (usually .cube or .3dl).

  2. Organize the LUTs into a folder for easy access.

Step 2: Install LUTs in FCPX

  1. Open Final Cut Pro X and create or open a project.

  2. Enable the Custom LUT Effect:

    • Select the clip you want to apply the LUT to.

    • Go to the Effects Browser (click the "Effects" button or press Command + 5).

    • Search for "Custom LUT" in the search bar.

    • Drag and drop the Custom LUT effect onto your clip.

  3. Load Your LUTs:

    • With the clip selected, go to the Inspector on the right.

    • In the Custom LUT section, click "Choose LUT".

    • Select "Add Custom LUTs" from the dropdown menu.

  4. Import Your LUTs:

    • Navigate to the folder where your LUTs are stored.

    • Select one or multiple .cube files and click Open.

Step 3: Apply the LUT

  • Once imported, select your desired LUT from the dropdown menu in the Custom LUT section.

  • Adjust the Mix slider to control the LUT intensity.

  • Fine-tune the look with additional color adjustments as needed.

Adobe Premiere Pro

Step 1: Prepare Your LUTs

  1. Ensure your LUT files are in a compatible format (.cube, .3dl, or .look).

  2. Organize the LUTs into a folder for easy access.

Step 2: Import LUTs into Premiere Pro

  1. Open Adobe Premiere Pro and create or open a project.

  2. Apply a Lumetri Color Effect:

    • Select the clip you want to apply the LUT to.

    • Open the Effects panel (or press Shift + 7).

    • Search for "Lumetri Color" in the Effects panel.

    • Drag and drop the Lumetri Color effect onto your clip.

Step 3: Apply a LUT

  1. Open the Lumetri Color Panel:

    • With the clip selected, go to the Lumetri Color panel (or open it via Window > Lumetri Color).

  2. Locate the Input LUT Option:

    • In the Lumetri Color panel, under the Basic Correction section, click the dropdown menu next to Input LUT.

    • Select Browse.

  3. Import the LUT:

    • Navigate to the folder containing your LUTs.

    • Select the .cube or .3dl file and click Open.

Step 4: Adjust the LUT

  • Adjust settings like Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, and Shadows in the Lumetri Color panel to fine-tune the look.

Optional: Permanently Add LUTs to Premiere Pro

If you want your LUTs to appear directly in Premiere Pro’s dropdown menu:

  1. Navigate to the Premiere Pro LUT folder on your computer:

    • Windows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\LUTs\

    • macOS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/LUTs/

  2. Place your .cube files in the appropriate folder:

    • Technical LUTs go into the Technical subfolder.

    • Creative LUTs go into the Creative subfolder.

  3. Restart Premiere Pro for the LUTs to appear in the Lumetri Color dropdown menus.

Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve

Step 1: Prepare Your LUTs

  1. Ensure your LUT files are in a compatible format (.cube).

  2. Organize the LUTs into a folder for easy access.

Step 2: Add LUTs to DaVinci Resolve

  1. Open DaVinci Resolve and create or open a project.

  2. Open Project Settings:

    • Click the gear icon (bottom-right corner) to access Project Settings.

  3. Access LUT Settings:

    • In the settings window, go to the Color Management section.

    • Scroll down to find the Lookup Tables section and click Open LUT Folder.

  4. Copy LUTs to the Folder:

    • Copy your .cube LUT files into the folder that opens.

  5. Refresh LUTs:

    • Return to DaVinci Resolve and click Update Lists in the Lookup Tables section to refresh the LUT database.

Step 3: Apply LUTs in the Color Page

  1. Go to the Color Page:

    • Switch to the Color Page (at the bottom of the interface).

  2. Open the LUT Panel:

    • In the top-left corner, click on the LUTs tab.

    • Navigate through the LUT folders to find your imported LUTs.

  3. Apply a LUT to a Clip:

    • Drag the desired LUT onto the clip in the Nodes section or directly onto the timeline.

Step 4: Adjust the LUT

  • Fine-tune the look using the color wheels, curves, and other tools in the Color Page.

  • Use the Key Output Gain on the node to adjust the LUT's intensity.
